4 : Continue The Conversation

Overview

Welcome to the fourth and final week of the Staff Challenge! This week focuses on “Continuing the Conversation”. We encourage people to continue talking about actions we can take to improve sustainability and address climate change. We want staff to talk to your coworkers, friends, and family (and us!) about what we can do better, and give your overall input on the Staff Challenge itself. This week you can get credit for submitting any ideas, conversations, or actions you’ve taken right in the staff challenge log.

Did you know:

Two in three Americans are moderately or very interested in global warming, yet 70% do not discuss the issue with friends and family due to a “spiral of silence”.

Why is this important?

Having conversations about climate change and solutions is equally as important as taking sustainable actions. Every individual has a sphere of influence through their colleagues, friends, family, and community. People often think others aren’t as concerned about climate change as they are, making them hesitant to start a conversation. By engaging in discussions with others about sustainability, you help increase visibility of these issues and broaden your impact.

How does the staff challenge work?
We want you to share what you’re doing to be a part of the solution! Whether it’s something you’ve been doing for years or a new action you took for the first time, you’ll get credit for just for sharing you ideas and actions. There are multiple ways to provide your input:

  1. Open this online form and submit your actions. Feel free to submit as many entries as you want! You’ll get one point for each submittal, and be entered in a raffle with each entry.
  2. Download and print this offline form, which you can fill out and return to us by the end of April. Feel free to share with your coworkers who don’t use email.
Last day to submit actions is Friday May 4!

We want to hear your ideas!
This week’s actions focus on encouraging park staff to continue thinking and talking about sustainable solutions beyond Earth Month. We want to provide you with tools and resources to learn more, so that you can make informed choices. We also want you to talk with others about what else you hope to do, or what you think the park should do. Any thoughts or actions you submit to the Staff Challenge log will get you credit for participating.

Feedback on the Staff Challenge:
We want to hear any feedback or suggestions you have on the Staff Challenge itself. Enter your thoughts into the log to get credit!
  • Do you have any constructive feedback on the overall Staff Challenge?
  • What motivated you to participate in the staff challenge?
  • Which theme was the most interesting to you (Transportation, Energy, Water, Closing the Loop)?
  • Which resource was the most helpful (Project Drawdown, Footprint Calculator, The ‘’Did You Knows’’, Videos, etc)?
  • What did you think about the GGNRA Staff challenge blog?

Conversations with family and coworkers:
Talking about sustainable actions with others is the best way to find solutions that have the biggest impact. Share with us any conversations you’ve had or ideas that you came up with. Use your sphere of influence to promote change!
  • Engage with a co-worker, friend, or family member about a sustainable practice and why it is important to you.
  • Come up with a plan to improve sustainability in your building or workgroup and share your ideas on the staff challenge log
  • Test out your new knowledge by having a conversation in a safe space to gain confidence. Share with us how it went!
  • Is there one or more sustainable practice(s) you will commit to continuing after this month?

Help make the park more sustainable:
We want your ideas for how the park can be more sustainable in the future. Our Green Team may be able to implement some of your ideas next year!
  • What actions do you want the park to undertake to improve sustainability?
  • Suggest any idea or topic for future conversation
  • Find ways to participate in community park activities such as the Sustainability Summit (4/30) and the National Park Rx Day Hike (4/29). Meet others and share ideas!

Keep Learning
Sustainable actions shouldn’t be confined to one day or one month of the year. Check out some of the best resources we used during the Staff Challenge, and find more ideas about how to continue your actions. Share what you learned in the Staff Challenge log to get credit for participation!
